During the 15-minute presentation, as many as seven new titles were announced. They also talked about important changes in management and approach to employees.
After a difficult period surrounding the release of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red is slowly getting back on a steady course. The Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners proved to be quite a success – both in terms of viewership and critical and fandom reception. The upcoming add-on to the base game, Phantom Liberty, is due out in 2023 and will encourage a return visit to Night City. But the Polish studio isn’t stopping and has just unveiled its ambitious plans.
In a 15-minute video, Adam Kicinski, Piotr Nielubowicz and Michał Nowakowski (CEO and board members respectively) presented the gaming giant’s strategy for the coming years. A large part of the presentation was devoted to changes in management and improvement of the work environment (on the occasion of the release of Cyberpunk 2077 there was a lot of talk about crunch and overtime caused by the pressure to release the title on time). It’s hard to be surprised by these changes – they seem necessary for CDPR to maintain any credibility in the marketplace. Unsurprisingly, they serve as an introduction to a list of titles due for release in the coming years. And there are a lot of them.
First of all, it will take place in the universe created by Andrzej Sapkowski. Boston-based studio The Molasses Flood (the name refers to the actual Molasses Flood that occurred as a result of an accident in that city in 1919) is currently working on a Witcher spin-off that’s set to feature online multiplayer. It’s a perfectly logical step in the development of the franchise. But none more so than the next title in the series. Work on the fourth mainline installment was announced some time ago. However, it turns out that instead of one sequel to Wild Game, we will get as many as three. CD Projekt Red is preparing a whole new trilogy, which is to be released within six years from the premiere of the first installment. Developers announce the construction of the engine (based on Unreal Engine), which will make the creation of three games should run smoothly. This is still not the end. An external, as yet unnamed studio is to work on a completely different title taking place in the same world.
The Cyberpunk sequel, on the other hand, wasn’t so obvious anymore. But it’s supposed to happen. However, you will have to be patient. Before that, the aforementioned trilogy starring Geralt is to be released. Apart from that, the studio is also working on a completely new IP. In the communiqué, however, it emphasizes that the work is at a very early stage and does not concern gameplay, but the setting itself.
CDPR is therefore focused on sustainable development, but it does not slow down with the production of triple A titles. However, it should be borne in mind that these announcements concern the perspective of many years, perhaps even the whole next decade.
